The Empire Reborn
Turn 2 Hantei
Missives from Hantei Province
Champions of the Clans,
Something has happened in Hantei province. There were warning signs of strange activity previously, but it appears for unknown reasons things have gotten worse. I am not certain what to make of my information, so instead I have includes copies of the correspondence with the Herald who was assigned to that province, one Seppun Satsu. I leave it to you decide what the cause may be and what to do about it.
I hope this month finds you well. I have been speaking with several thousand peasants that the Lion Clan has moved into Hantei to begin the replacement of the missing inhabitants. Though the work of restarting the fields, forges, and fires of this is hard, the peasants are happy with the generosity of the Lion in allowing them their pick of places and resources. In record time the militaristic organization has gotten things back on track.
There is a cottage industry here in rumors and supposition about what happened to the previous inhabitants. The Lion have, understandably, limited information about what tragedy happened here as to not panic the more superstitious, but that hasn’t stopped the speculation. The stories range from the populace turning to animals to mass migration to a magical wish-granting spirit realm to a Shadowlands creature that takes the minds of those who sleep. I’ve been documenting as many as a can, as you know folklore is somewhat of a hobby of mine.
The Lion troops have pulled out en-masse, heading south. There appears to be a major battle in the works at Toturi province. I’m tempted to head south with my cage of little birds and try and send you the events as they happen, but I know I’m supposed to focus on my province. Matsuko will have all the excitement this month it seems. The peasants seem a uneasy, but are loyal subjects of the Lion and will till these lands for them while their kinsmen battle to the south.
The past several days have been very strange. I can’t shake this increasing sense of unease. I feel like I’m being watched somehow, even when I am certain I am alone. The nights seem increasingly dark, even as I light extra lanterns. The peasants are also acting odd. At first they also seemed anxious, but the past several days I have seen them congregating in the fields and houses, talking excitedly. When I approach, the all turn as one and stare at me, refusing to speak until I move out of earshot. I managed to sneak up on a small group and heard something about a gathering tomorrow night up past Sun’s Rest Pass. I think it is time for some more field work. I am going to take my cage of little birds and send out messages as I can, so if there is something brewing you will know quickly.
Have not seen peasants all day. Fields, villages empty, like everyone walked away. Heading to pass. Sun is setting, but feel like waiting bad idea
Storm coming in. Unseasonably cold. Lighting flashing in the clouds growls. Has reddish tint? Probably paranoia. Probably
Through the pass. Thought I knew this area, but its rocky when I remember it flat? Night falling, everything different in the dark
I see lights ahead. Fires, but flames are too crimson, not enough orange. What are they burning for fuel. Is this camp?
Is this a castle? There isn’t a Kyuden here, not since Kyuden Hantei was abandoned a century ago. What is going on? Am going to investigate further
